Jonas Leriche

PHOTOGRAPHY AND SCULPTURE

BIOGRAPHY

Born in Belgium in 1976, Leriche began his personal journey into Fine Art photography after years as a fashion photographer. This transformative decision allowed Leriche to delve into the rich layers of his profession. His work explores emotions, intentional or unconscious ideas and transforms them into gripping images. Leriche constructs his photographs layer by layer, with meticulous attention to detail. Taking the actual photo is but the final stage of a long, deliberate process, punctuated by flashes of inspiration. Leriche considers himself an art director first, and then a photographer.

Struggling between the authenticity of nature, and the artificiality of photography, Leriche finds a perfect balance in pushing the boundaries of the natural in his production studio. In a world dominated by mere appearance, social media posturing and superficiality, the driving force behind Leriche’s work is the desire to inject the rawness of nature into the seamless, controlled perfection of my photographs in order to undermine the facile gaze of viewers unaccustomed to scratching any deeper than the surface.

Leriche’s artistic method is a dramatic, ongoing and even vital process. His ultimate wish is that his artworks will also awaken viewers to a process of reconnection with the essential.

ABOUT

Authenticity and artificiality

Even at a young age he was fascinated by the beauty of nature, and it has exerted an elemental pull on him ever since. This authentic experience stands in shrill contrast with the world in which he has lived and worked for the last decade, a world dominated by mere appearance, social media posturing and superficiality. The driving force behind his work is the desire to inject the rawness of nature into the seamless, controlled perfection of his photographs in order to undermine the facile gaze of viewers unaccustomed to scratching any deeper than the surface.

Photography is just a medium

Transforming emotions, intentional or unconscious ideas into gripping images: this is what matters to him. Constructing his photographs layer by layer, with meticulous attention to detail, he composes his vision of beauty. Taking the actual photo is but the final stage of a long, deliberate process, punctuated by flashes of inspiration. This is why he considers myself an art director first, and then a photographer.

Larger than life

The scenarios he creates go far beyond the individual or the anecdotal. His aim is not merely to create an aesthetically appealing photo, but to create something larger than life. That is why he transforms individual models into dramatic, iconic figures that tap into a deeper level of experience, melancholy and mortality. The real quest, however, is to discover true beauty inner, mysterious beauty for the viewer to gradually unravel.

Invitation to an inward journey

After years as a fashion photographer, he felt an emptiness, and something calling him. It was time to take the journey inward, to transform. Photography was the only way for me to make this journey. Delving into the rich layers in his photographs enables him to connect with deeper layers in himself. His authentic self. It is a dramatic, ongoing and even vital process. His ultimate wish is that his Art works will also awaken his viewers to a process of reconnection with the essential.
